CHAPTER 16

LAURA

Xander holds me in his arms as I listen to the sound of the sink running in the kitchen.

Apparently, the pink in my sister’s hair is only the result of a color shampoo and it will wash out, but it's taken her at least half an hour and she's still going.

He hasn't said anything in the time we've been alone, and I worry what that might mean.

"Your sister is definitely the opposite of you," he finally speaks.

My heart lodges in my throat as he laces his fingers through mine, squeezing my palm.

Does he mean that as a good thing or a bad thing? I hope it's neither and just a simple observation.

"I did warn you." My voice squeaks a bit. I curse myself for not sounding stronger, less brittle. The suspense is killing me. For all I know, he likes the promiscuous, bad ass, pink-haired version of me washing her hair in the kitchen right now and I am no longer on his radar at all.

"What's wrong?" he asks as he turns to me, stroking my hair in the soothing pattern he always does. "Talk to me, darling."

At least I'm still darling to him. Maybe that's a good sign.

"What do you think of her?" I ask, but his honey hazel eyes just stare into mine.

"What I think of her doesn't matter."

"Yes, it does." More than you know. After everything that's happened since we met, Xander is the only thing holding me together. He's my one constant.

"Are you worried that I might hate your sister?" he inquires with amusement sprinkled in his tone like a dash of salt on a batch of fries.

"Quite the opposite, actually."

That wasn't supposed to come out. It was supposed to stay locked away, but he heard it. Those words can never be taken away and they can't be misinterpreted.

His eyes harden and he pulls me tight against him, holding my gaze like Medusa.

"You're the only one I want," he says with such conviction my heart aches. "If I had met her before you, I might've brought her to my bed…"

Thank you for that unnecessary image which will be burned into my mind for the rest of my life.

"...but, it would've just been sex, like everyone else before you. She's not you. You're different, Laura Murdoch. No one could possibly compare to you. You're mine."

His lips claim my own in a dominating kiss and my fingers knot in his hair, holding him close to me. My heart breaks and mends with every word, every kiss, every touch.

Even if he had the option of choosing my sister, the girl who's a better fit for his world, he'd choose me. I'm the one he wants.

He's my choice, too.

"Thank you," I whisper breathlessly as he pulls out of the kiss and plants soft kisses below my ear.

"Even though I should be sleeping, I really want to make you scream for me, make you come all over my face, remind you how I can't get enough of your beautiful body. It's addicting.
